April 11,2009: Jessica and Jason recorded a PSA about
the bone marrow drive. Listen

Recently, Jonathan Grossman, owner and founder of TheOffice.com
was diagnosed with a very rare bone marrow disorder called
"Myelofibrosis"
that destroys the body's ability to produce blood. This disease
affects only 2 people in a million, and if left untreated
will rapidly mature into an incurable and deadly form of leukemia.
Jonathan's only hope for survival is a bone marrow transplant.
Over the past several months, Jonathan's health has continued
to deteriorate, requiring him to undergo weekly hospital visits
to receive replacement blood transfusions. These transfusions
are his only means of survival until a bone marrow transplant
can be effected.
To date, a suitable bone marrow donor has not been found.
In an effort to find matching donors not only for Jonathan
but for the thousands of others who are also desperately seeking
a viable matching bone marrow donor, we are encouraging everyone
to get tested as soon as possible.
Donating bone marrow and/or stem cells poses little risk
to the donor as your body will regenerate the missing cells
quite quickly. But it could save someone's life.
First stage testing is a simple cheek swab that gets sent
to a lab for analysis. If this test shows you to be a likely
compatible donor, you will be contacted and asked to undergo
a blood test and health assessment to confirm your ability
to be a donor. Successful donors will have their expenses
covered.
CANADIAN DONORS
can get a FREE cheek swab test kit sent to them by mail by
filing out the online form at www.onematch.ca
USA DONORS
can get a cheek swab kit sent to them by mail for a $54 tax-deductible
contribution to cover laboratory testing costs. Use the online
form located at www.giftoflife.com
We urge you to, please, take the time to fill out the information,
test yourself, and mail it back.
It will take a small bit of time out of your day, but it
could add many more years to Jonathan's life, or one of the
many others in desperate need of a donor.
If you couldn't attend the April 26th Bone Marrow
Drive, you can still be tested!
If were are unable to attend the drive, but would be interested
in registering to be on the donor list, you can still be tested:

INTERNATIONAL DONORS: In
any country you can go to your local registry and your information
will be made available in the international database. All
the donor databases are linked, and whether you live in Australia
or right here in Toronto, if you are a match for Jonathan,
you could be his donor.
Even if you don't live in Canada you
can still be tested!

If you already registered for a
bone marrow test, you don't have to register again.
If you were tested at a drive sponsored by the Gift
of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, (formerly the Friends
of Jay Feinberg), you can check if you are in the registry
by calling Toll Free: +1-800-9MARROW.
People with any ethnic background can donate bone marrow
Anyone can donate if they are in good health.
Almost anyone can be tested as a potential
donor!
Any man or woman in good health and between the ages of 18
and 60, can become a donor.
The registration process is fast and easy - and involves
no blood!
We only require four swabs from inside your cheeks (no blood
will be drawn at this time). The donor is then entered into
the registry.
Getting tested is free!
If you are tested at our Bone Marrow Drive or via OneMatch.ca,
it is free and you won't be charged for any part of the testing
or donation process.
You can now donate some money to offset some of the Grossman's costs for testing
While the test and procedure is free to potential donors,
the cost of the Gift of Life testing kits is in the tens of
thousands of dollars (US$54 per kit or CDN$67) and the Grossman
family are gratefully accepting donations to offset some of
their costs for these kits and cash/cheque donations on the
day of the drive. Please see the donate
page for more information.
